Does a Fat Cyclist jersey make me look fat?

A local television station shot this last spring. The telephoto lens makes it look like traffic is fairly heavy, but in reality it's not. The low angle shot, however, makes me look kinda fat. Not that it's a bad thing, you know.

The interview was longer, of course. It's unfortunate that I didn't get in anything about vehicular cycling, although the lane positioning is very good. What might appear as a quick head check is actually me spitting downwind - a critical skill for any cyclist.

Oh, and that is a Fat Cyclist jersey. Fritz over on Cyclelicious gave it to me!

Hi. I found my way over here from Fatty's blog. Allow me to tell you what I often tell myslef - if that shirt makes you look fat then you probably are! Good for you being out there on a bike though.

I also popped over from Fat Cyclist's blog. Great to see you riding in Tulsa. I took my bike out there a few times when working and used it to get to and from the hotel and the work site. It helped I was visiting consultants (Intellocity, now gone I believe).

If it is any consolation, I look much worse in my cycle gear than you do.

Thanks for the comments. That footage was taken as I went north on Mingo Road on the east side of the airport. My wife saw it and freaked out. "You ride in all that traffic!" she gasped. It's a good thing my mother doesn't have a computer or I'd get a lecture from her too.

We drill this into students - lane position, lane position, lane position. It makes riding on a 4 lane arterial like that so much easier and less stressful.

As a newly certified League of American Bicyclists instructor I can say your scanning and position is spot on- excellent! Maybe I could use this video when teaching some of my students?

You can certainly use it Jenni, but realize that the telephoto shots make it look like there's more traffic. And as for scanning, well, I was actually spitting! Maybe you didn't want to know that.

A video is worth more than 1000 words... you didn't have to say anything about VC, your lane position spoke.

And ... we need to dispense with the myth that only skinny white men can ride in traffic :-)
